Your head tilts to the side as you sigh heavily through your nose, your spine pressing deeper into the couch and your arms crossed over your chest.

You should be annoyed. It's not fair that he can be so unintentionally funny during an argument—even if it wasn’t a serious argument to begin with, and more like a heated discussion about vigilante titles.

The burn of Jason’s gaze sits heavily on your profile, and you try not to flicker your eyes slightly to the right where he sits opposite you, his large form taking up most of the space on your second couch.

But the muscles in your cheek are twitching, the corners of your lips fighting to curl upwards. You struggle against it, attempting to keep your expression as neutral as possible.

You know you’ve lost the battle the moment you hear the soft huff of air from Jason, the tell-tale sigh of his stifled amusement. He’s laughing.

“Oh, shut it. Wasn’t funny,” you mumble, trying to desperately hide the growing grin in your voice. It’s all so ridiculous.

You hear the shift of fabric, the soft exhalation of air as Jason stands to his feet. You immediately turn your head to him, and watch with mild anticipation as he steps around the coffee table. The frame of his broad shoulders come into view, his arms caging you in, though you don’t feel trapped.

His blue eyes pin you where you are—liquid blue, sapphire and jade intermingled like watercolours.

Your stomach flips as they crease around the corners, amusement colouring the lines in his face. Jason dips his head closer to you, nose gently nudging yours with a featherlike touch.

“Totally not funny,” he murmurs, his lips pulled upward into that subtle smile you adore so much, pearl white teeth revealed

“Jerk,” you grumble, still fighting against a grin, before Jason’s lips capture yours and you’re enveloped in his warmth, lost in his touch.

You can still taste the laughter on his tongue.

New York State Attorney General Letitia James has advised health care providers in the state that failing to provide gender-affirming care to transgender minors violates New York antidiscrimination law.

Donald Trump issued an executive order last week titled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” targets the use of puberty blockers, hormone therapies, and surgeries for anyone under 19, referring to them as “chemical and surgical mutilation.” It directs federal agencies to rescind policies supporting such treatments, withdraw funding from institutions that provide them, and enforce existing laws limiting access to these procedures. This comes even though these procedures are endorsed by every major medical organization. The order requires the Department of Health and Human Services to review and revise medical guidelines related to gender-affirming care. It specifically singles out the World Professional Association for Transgender Health and its Standards of Care, calling it lacking in “scientific integrity.” HHS is instructed to publish a review of the existing literature on gender dysphoria and develop alternative guidelines, while agencies like the Department of Justice are tasked with investigating providers and enforcing stricter legal measures against what the order terms “deceptive practices.” In the wake of the order, NYU Langone, a New York City hospital, canceled appointments for some young trans people seeking care, The New York Times reports. Two families told the Times their children’s appointments to receive puberty blockers had been canceled. The Times sought comment from NYU Langone, but a spokesperson declined.

In an open letter posted online Monday, James referred to a temporary restraining order stopping the Trump administration from freezing all federal funding. The Department of Justice issued the required notice of compliance with the order, which James quoted. “The notice states that ‘federal agencies cannot pause, freeze, impede, block, cancel, or terminate any awards or obligations on the basis of the OMB memo, or on the basis of the President’s recently issued Executive Orders,’ such as those targeting DEI programs and gender affirming care for minors. The DOJ Notice further states that this prohibition ‘applies to all awards or obligations,’ including those made to grant recipients such as hospitals, non-profits, or other organizations or entities, and also applies to future grants of federal assistance.” “Regardless of the availability of federal funding, we write to further remind you of your obligations to comply with New York State laws, including those that prohibit discrimination against individuals based on their membership in a protected class, such as sex, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, race, creed, color, national origin, citizenship or immigration status, military status, disability, or marital status,” she continued. “Electing to refuse services to a class of individuals based on their protected status, such as withholding the availability of services from transgender individuals based on their gender identity or their diagnosis of gender dysphoria, while offering such services to cisgender individuals, is discrimination under New York law.” Puberty blockers are often given to cisgender people for treatment of early-onset puberty, endometriosis, and other conditions.

The pundit on Israel’s right-wing news channel was visibly anxious.

One American president, said Yuval Malka, presented a “window of opportunity” for Israel to have free rein across the Middle East. But the other, he cautioned, was fickle, appearing to love Israel but liable to leave it in the lurch and constrain its military might.

The president he said Israelis should fear? Donald Trump.

“Remember what I’m saying: Don’t be impressed by Trump, and don’t be impressed by his taking office,” Malka, a former military police official, said on Israeli Channel 14 this week. “We needed to, and we still can, take advantage of the window of opportunity in the gaps between the outgoing administration and incoming administration to do everything we think we need to do, both in Gaza and Iran.”

He added, “We’ll be left here without the ability to execute anything. So we need to do — as fast as possible, before he takes office — everything we think needs to happen, and to create a fact on the ground.”

For about eight years, the Israeli right and its advocates abroad have looked to Trump as their champion — and the admiration was understandable. As president, he and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu forged a close relationship, with Trump delivering on a list of Netanyahu’s long-held wishes. In 2019, images of the two shaking hands figured prominently in Netanyahu’s reelection campaign.

But now, some of those who praised Trump in both Israel and the United States are trashing the hostage deal he is championing as he reenters office — and in some cases, they’re criticizing Trump himself.

The wariness comes after reports that Trump and his incoming Middle East envoy, Steve Witkoff, turned the screws on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to get him to yes on the ceasefire deal. Upon the deal’s announcement, Trump called it “EPIC.”

Alongside Malka, a user on X named Nioh Berg, who has 185,000 followers and identifies as “Anti Woke,” has spent the past couple days railing against the incoming president she only recently adulated. On Jan. 9, she posted, “We are entering the Age of Trump, and the whole world is feeling it. What a wonderful sight. Optimism is in the air, the energy has shifted.”

Following the announcement of the deal on Wednesday, six days later, her tone was different.

She wrote, above a Trump post praising the deal, “No, Trump. You forced Israel into a terrible deal for 33 hostages, several of whom are dead. The majority will remain kept inside Gaza, their fate up in the air. You did this in order to claim a win on the 20th, and with no other considerations taken. Extremely disappointing.”

She was referring to Monday, which is Jan. 20 and Trump’s inauguration date.

Many supporters and observers of the Israeli right aren’t shocked that Trump’s love isn’t unconditional. Trump portrays himself as a dealmaker and has long professed a desire to make the “Deal of the Century” in the Middle East, as well as bring an end to the Israel-Hamas war.

On Wednesday, Israeli journalist Shmuel Rosner tweeted, “Is the right disappointed in Trump? Yes, but they’re not necessarily surprised. The Israeli right doesn’t have heavenly faith in the president. And that was before it became known that he put pressure on the question of a hostage deal.”

Other more prominent fans of the once and future president have inveighed against the deal without mentioning his name. Itamar Ben-Gvir — Israel’s far-right national security minister and the country’s leading opponent of an agreement — quoted a Jewish blessing in Israel’s parliament on the occasion of Trump’s victory in November.

On Tuesday, as a deal appeared imminent, he said, “The coalescing agreement is an agreement of surrender to Hamas.”

Likewise, the American Jewish organization that has most celebrated Trump, the Zionist Organization of America, has come out vocally against the deal — without naming the incoming president cheerleading it. In 2022, ZOA gave Trump its Herzl Award, a rare honor from the group, and its president, Morton Klein, called him “the best friend Israel ever had in the White House.”

This week alone, the group has sent out three emails to its list opposing the deal.

“Alleged Deal Would Mean More Jews Will Be Murdered and Kidnapped; a Hamas Victory and Resurgence,” one message says. It did not mention Trump.

Arkansas Sen. Tom Cotton opted to blame outgoing President Joe Biden for the agreement, without mentioning that Trump’s team worked closely with Biden’s and staunchly supported the agreement.

“Why is lame duck Joe Biden trying to cram down a bad deal on Israel on his way out the door?” Cotton tweeted. “The only ‘deal’ should be unconditional surrender by Hamas—which is already nearly destroyed—and return of ALL hostages.”

One user responded, “Ask Trump.”

Recently, Flora has been talking a lot of nonsense again. I'm not sure if that's a side effect of dementia or what-not; I suggested her to go visit a law firm or a clinic, if she so pleased. She replied, and I quote: " You have no appeal. "

All else aside, I have been assigned to replying prayers for the next few hours. It's all really boring nonsense like "Fix my car so I don't have to go to a mechanic and pay them" and "I want to born pretty" and "My child is dying from cancer, please save them"- actually, I might look over that one. Oh, and there's also the classic "Bless with thy holy blah blah blah" sort of things.

Another thing to mention, Flora apparently wants me to try gardening now. She insists so, saying since I'm her protégé, I should at least know how to take care of plants. It's stupid, but I might as well try. Who knows: maybe I can be the next Goddess of Nature or something.

Gardening is... not exactly as calming as Flora had made it out to be. It's not helping that all the plants are so fragile that they all break when I try to water them. She told me that I needed to be more gentle, and not treat them like they slaughtered my entire bloodline.

I swear, I am giving my best effort. It's just that... these things die so fast that they make look mortals look like ogres. She said it wasn't hard so... maybe I'm just doing it wrong? Maybe not the right tools??? Not everyone uses the same equipment, I guess.

Florence's garden is pretty amazing though. But... WAY too pungent for the nose, and can become a bit of an eyesore. I think I might have killed... a couple dozen plants but who's counting.

I really like this certain flower though. It looks very pretty and smells nice. Florence said I shouldn't get too close though. She says it can get intoxicating at time. I don't get it. Why do all nice things seem to have a cost anyway?

I think there was a fancier name for it (Flora probably explained the whole origin of this flower.) but I just call it a white lily. Do I still like roses? Yes. But they still come at a good third place.

I'm heading to Daisy's after this- I heard it's someone's birthday today, not sure who-- but might as well go check it out. Can't hurt, right?
